Born2Play Online Event is a part of a fundraising campaign aimed to establish the Formless Arts Center in Bahia-Brazil. Top professionals in the field of human movement, contemporary dance, somatics and martial arts are generously willing to support the campaign by offering their expertise in the online festival. We feel deeply honored and humbled by the heartfelt collective efforts and voices from all contributors, teachers and volunteers to the making of a training hall that will be the physical pillar for an artistic center during these exceedingly challenging disruptive times, particularly for the impacted artistic communities.
Born2Play was initially conceived as a presential Festival organized by Formless Arts. It had its premiere in 2019 in Italy Tuscany. The Festival envisioned the creation of a temporary cross-disciplinary hub that acknowledges and welcomes a diversity of bodily languages and movement perspectives that are united by the importance of adopting playfulness not as a trivial attitude but an essential embodied state of being. At the first edition Born2Play collaborated with the following teachers: Simon Tharkur; Tomislav English; Tom Weksler; and Jorge Itapua Beiramar. In 2020 Born2Play was scheduled to have an urban version in Berlin followed up by the summer festival in Tuscany, like in the previous year.
THE CAMPAIGN BACKGROUND
The harsh impact from the pandemics scattered the perspective for the B2P events to be carried out and gain momentum. Under the impossibility to give continuity, not only with Born2Play but with most of the Formless Arts events, Bruno Caverna (originator of Formless Arts) together with Marina Pereira took refuge in the Algodões Beach in the state of Bahia - Brazil. Once they arrived there they were immediately confronted with a life changing opportunity, the acquirement of a piece of land to build a house. Along the construction process / the project was organically expanding and revealing the potential to be transformed into a cultural center as well. What was supposed to be a simple living house took a different turn. That was the birth of the Bamboo Dojo, a literal ground that would allow Formless Arts to take off, to establish its own space of events for artistic and educational purposes.
The shift of plans implied into a much higher financial cost and responsibility, a daring leap to be committed to. Unfortunately the actual financial resources to finish the Bamboo Dojo are not matching the budget that keeps growing along the ever-expanding physical dimensions that the construction is taking on along the way. Under this sense of economical immediacy and fragility Bruno has put out a call to his close friends, well-informed teachers, martial artists and many others who would sincerely like to be part of the campaign, to collectively raise indispensable funds, which will help out to cover the costs, currently estimated somewhere between 10.000 - 15.000 euros. The call is a wholehearted invitation for whoever appreciates and recognizes the Formless Arts path. Ultimately it is a call to align the minds and hearts towards a shared purpose, to join forces and to get engaged proactively in meaningful artistic cause.
FROM FESTIVAL TO CAMPAIGN
Each teacher/facilitator will be free to contribute with their expertise in the way they feel comfortable about it (please check the schedule to see how each of them will share their time with us). The combination of each of their contributions will compile a multidisciplinary mosaic, extremely rich in diversity and content. The different entries and approaches will surely be complimentary in their uniqueness. It will be a delightful endeavor to retrieve Born2Play Festival and adapt it as a campaign format with the support of a fantastic gathering of inspiring teachers. It will be refreshing as well to remind all of us how beneficial a sense of playfulness could be reintegrated back in our lives, particularly during the times when play has been severely undermined and virtually wiped out from the social priorities.
The urge to get back on track with the physical events is growing stronger at each day as the future perspective remain obscure. The realization is that this new life cycle is asking enhanced sensitivity to coordinate the presential events from a fresh and innovative perspective. Many aspects will be surely figured out and adapted along the process as it naturally unfolds. What is already crystal clear, though, at this point is that regardless the way the Bamboo Dojo and the Formless Artistic Center will develop, it will get started by hosting modest and exclusive events for committed small groups wishing to embark on a self-discovery ride through body-mind explorations, movement research, breath-work and consciousness contemplation.
All the funds raised by this online event will go towards the construction of the Bamboo Dojo, the house of Formless Arts Center
Dojo is a Japanese word that literally means "place of the way" commonly referred to the martial arts training contexts. Our main drive is to retrieve the professional perspective Formless Arts used to have before the pandemics, to keep on cultivating "the way", to keep on moving freely around the obstacles and restrictions imposed by the current global crisis. It is an exhilarating perspective to create from the bottom up our own modest center that will grant us full autonomy to host small-scale events such as retreats, immersions, performances, educational courses and artistic residencies.
The highlight of the project lies in its exuberant bamboo architecture, made with three types of bamboos: Guadua; Giant and Phyllostachys. The Bamboo Dojo has been designed to have about 100m2 and it is elevated from the ground, giving a "floating" feeling in between trees with a delightful view to the jungle and surroundings. In the backside of the dojo there will be the Formless Arts office that can be transformed and easily adapt to a guest room. The center has been projected to have a structure able to welcome a couple in the guest room and to comfortably accommodate about 5 tents on the land.
The Formless Arts Center will be located inside Maraú Peninsula in the Algodões Beach. To be more precise, it will be about a 7m walking distance from one the most wondrous native beaches in Bahia along an endless coastline of coconut trees. The beach is protect by coral reefs, good for surfing¡, diving and during the low tides in the summer months there is a formation of vast areas of white sand and areas with pools in between the reefs. Our land is in the midst of a little jungle, surrounded by rainforest, an amazing tropical ecosystem with an extremely rich fauna and flora, loads of greens and trees, flowers, birds, little monkeys and other exotic animals.
