THE AWAKENED BODY
The overriding emphasis is on developing within oneself what can be called the 'total act'; a state wherein the performer opens to a wider range of one's own 'movement as a theatrical act' rather than as a technique. Drawing from over a decade of experience working with Ultima Vez and based on over 25 years of performance research into dance, theatre, and music, the central focus of this workshop will concentrate on concrete, yet, simple asks designed to deal with risk. Confronting this volatile starting point is the first step in helping one to access with greater awareness their own creative reservoir and put it into action. Once unlocked, our attention, intention and awareness guide our work naturally.
We begin with a series of physical exercises that enable one to establish a strong and vital body-breath connection. These exercises are also designed to gradually unlock the flow of living impulses within the body. By doing so, we allow our attention, intention and awareness to flow more freely. Gradually we start to pierce into the heart of our unknown, hidden, or 'shadow' sides both within ourselves and within our work. Naturally, this asks us to develop a greater awareness and trust regarding the dynamic relationship between impulse and action. Elements of physical, psychological, and emotional risk will be introduced each day, challenging our individual limitations, inviting us to go beyond them, revealing our unique language and presence as performers. We will then introduce compositional tools combining movement, spatial and rhythmic awareness through improvised scores. We will also focus on the relationships between precision and organicity, awareness of space and one's ability to react to its constituent elements, improvisation within a structure as well as dramaturgical elaboration.
